Title: Zero-Temperature Freezing in the 3d Kinetic Ising Model

Examining Committee: Sid Redner, Anders Sandvik, Rama Bansil, Lee Roberts

Abstract:

We study the long-time state of the kinetic Ising model on periodic cubic lattices after a quench to zero temperature. In contrast to the conventional picture from coarsening dynamics, we find (i) clusters at long time are highly interpenetrating and topologically complex, (ii) the long-time state is almost never static, but rather contains “blinker” spins that can flip forever with no energy cost, and (iii) the energy relaxation is extraordinarily slow, with time scales growing exponentially with the system size.

Best wishes to Jason!!
