Abstract: IceCube, the first neutrino telescope with an instrumented volume of a cubic kilometer, is currently under construction at the South Pole. I will review the science motivation as well as the technical challenges in designing and building such a colossal instrument in one of the harshest environments on Earth, and I will give a glimpse of the first physics results from IceCube. In addition, I will describe future extensions to the observatory, including an embedded low energy array already under construction, as well as plans to extend the observatory to the GZK regime.
