A New Era if UHE Cosmic Ray and Neutrino Astrophyics

Speaker: Angela Olinto, University of Chicago

When: October 17, 2006 (Tue), 03:15PM to 05:00PM (add to my calendar)
Hosted by: Andrew Cohen

This event is part of the Physics Department Colloquia Series.

The imminent completion of the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina will mark the beginning of a new era in AstroParticle Physics. Over the next 3 years, the long-standing mystery of the origin of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) will begin to be resolved. Auger South will increase by one order of magnitude the worldwide exposure to UHECRs, which will give a precise measurement of their spectrum, some indication of their composition, and possibly the first hints of deviations from an isotropic distribution of arrival directions. We will discuss the predictions for this new era of understanding the origin of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic ray and the possible detection of Ultra-High energy neutrinos.
