Abstract: A critical component of the scientific method is quantifying and communicating what experimental data say about the models and theories we use to describe our world. Although statistics is rarely emphasized in a physics curriculum, the importance of having a working knowledge of statistical methods in physics cannot be understated. As physicists, we rely on statistics to contextualize data, compare results, and benchmark our experiments. This talk will cover basic statistical techniques and provide examples demonstrating their use in physics contexts.
