SUMMARY:Statistics & Data Analysis for Physicists
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Thomas Wester\, Boston University\nHosted by: Eric Bo
yers\n\nPart of the Graduate Student Council Events.\n\nPart of the student
seminar series. A recording will be posted on the event page.\n\nAbstract:
A critical component of the scientific method is quantifying and communica
ting what experimental data say about the models and theories we use to des
cribe our world. Although statistics is rarely emphasized in a physics curr
iculum\, the importance of having a working knowledge of statistical method
s in physics cannot be understated. As physicists\, we rely on statistics t
o contextualize data\, compare results\, and benchmark our experiments. Thi
s talk will cover basic statistical techniques and provide examples demonst
rating their use in physics contexts.
