Studies of the top quark at the LHC provide a way to test the predictions of perturbative QCD as well as search for new physics signatures that may couple preferentially to massive particles. My talk will focus on the production of a single top quark via electroweak interactions, which presents challenges and opportunities distinct from the dominant pair-production mode. I will review ATLAS analyses that place stringent tests on Monte Carlo models and PDF predictions, directly measure the Vtb CKM matrix element, search for rare Standard Model processes, and search for anomalous couplings in the tWb vertex.
