Developing and understanding methods to induce quasi-adiabatic dynamics at finite times is paramount to the advancement of quantum information technologies. As a way to achieve this, I will introduce the notion of transitionless or counter-diabatic driving. I will discuss how transitionless driving allows to engineer time-dependent protocols which avoid any transition between energy levels, and discuss its limitations. Next, I will discuss a new variational approach to this problem that allows one to construct approximate physical counter-diabatic Hamiltonians. I shown that, in certain problems, these approximate Hamiltonians can decrease dissipation and increase fidelity of ground state preparation by order of magnitude. This points to novel approaches to designing fast annealing protocols, and more efficient quantum and classical computational devices and algorithms.
