I will describe some recent progress in understanding information loss and restoration in two dimensional conformal field theories dual to three dimensional Anti-de Sitter black holes. By introducing a useful observable, the spectral form factor, related to an analytic continuation of the thermal partition function, I will discuss whether information restoration is a dynamical or kinematic property of gravity. I will also discuss certain solvable models, in which the details of information restoration can be understood as coming from an infinite set of semi-classical saddles.
