New Laws of Networks
Novel phenomena occur when two or more networks are coupled together. Professor Gene Stanley, Sergey Buldyrev, Gerald Paul, and collaborators, demonstrated a dramatic increase in the probability of a cascading avalanche of failure when interactions between networks are considered. Their work, which used real data from a power network and an Internet network that were implicated in an electrical blackout that occurred in Italy in September 2003, has appeared in Nature, with an accompanying News & Views.
