Muon Lifetime
The MuLan collaboration, led by co-spokesperson Rob Carey, announced its final result on the muon lifetime at an international conference in March. The new result is precise to just over 1 ppm – yielding a precise determination of the Fermi constant of the weak interactions. The BU group, including Professors Jim Miller and Lee Roberts, are also involved in two muon capture experiments. MuCap, which has already made the best-ever measurement of the pseudoscalar coupling constant (how the strong interaction influences the weak) hopes to improve on that result by early next year. MuSun measures muon capture on deuterium, recently finished a commissioning run and a production run is planned for the fall of 2010.
