Abstract: On July 4th, 2012, the ATLAS and CMS experiments announced the discovery of a new particle that appears to closely resemble the long sought after Higgs boson. In this colloquium, the importance of the Higgs boson in the Standard Model of particle physics will be presented along with a review of the latest results from the LHC experiments. The implication of this discovery on the future of particle physics will also be discussed; is the new particle the Higgs boson predicted by the Standard Model ? Or is this the first hint of something more exotic ?
