We will present a strategy and a set of tools for characterizing physics beyond the Standard Model in a model-independent scheme. We introduce the idea of On-Shell Effective Theories (OSETs) as a means of characterizing collider data in terms of masses, production modes, and decay modes of candidate new particles. We demonstrate that a simple parametrization scheme for new-physics dynamics suffices to reproduce kinematics and can be used to deduce the basic structure of new physics.
