Does quantum field theory describe everything at long distances? Fractons, a novel class of topological phases, present critical challenges to our understand of quantum field theory. We will develop a field-theoretic framework for the fracton phases, and discuss their peculiar global symmetries. This talk will be based on ongoing projects with Nathan Seiberg.
