Jack Stropko (CME) Gettin' glassy: theories of glass transitions
The glass transition is widely seen as one of the deepest open problems in condensed matter physics. In this talk I will go over a number of current theories on the nature of the glass transition as outlined in 'In search of a theory of supercooled liquids' by S. A. Kivelson and G. Tarjus.
Thomas Wester (HEE) Neutrino Physics and Beyond with Super-Kamiokande
Under a mountain in western Japan lies the Super-Kamiokande detector. Super-K (for short) studies the peculiar properties of the incredibly abundant but rarely-interacting neutrino particle to answer questions about the origins and development of our universe. This talk will present an overview of the detector's operating principles, highlight results from the experiment's past 20 years of ongoing data collection and analysis, and discuss the present work and future goals for the next phase of Super-K.
