Calculations show that on average renewable energy can easily provide more than 100% of the total US energy consumption for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, the Carnot efficiency limit on heat burning engines implies that when renewables replace fossil fuels, they only need to provide ~ 50% of the energy contained in the fossil fuels we are using now. Additional opportunities for energy efficiency are also considered.
