"Draining a superfluid hose"

Speaker: Dries Sels, Boston University, Physics Department

When: February 23, 2018 (Fri), 12:00PM to 01:00PM (add to my calendar)
Location: SCI 352

This event is part of the Condensed Matter Theory Seminar Series.

In this talk I will discuss ongoing work on the dynamics of quantum systems subject to continuous local measurement. Specifically, I will discuss some preliminary results on 1D condensates in which particles are continuously being lost. In the thermodynamic limit, a non-trivial non-equilibrium steady state will develop. I will provide evidence for the fact that Hawking radiation is emitted from the drain.
