Abstract: Recent experiments on ultra-cold strongly interacting bosons in optical lattice traps have revealed the co-existence of different phases. Such systems bring to light a plethora issues of interest from the cold atomic as well as condensed matter perspective – the existence of multiple Mott insulating states in these inhomogeneous systems; means of probing such coexistence; the possiblity of superfluid order trapped between Mott states and the associated excitation spectrum, and several others.
In this talk, following a brief description of the system at hand, these issues will be theoretically addressed.
