Example 2

A certain object is more dense than a particular fluid. The object has a weight W, and an apparent weight Wa when immersed in the fluid. What is the density ρ of the object?

If the object is resting on the bottom of the container:

mg = N + Fb, where N = Wa

mg = ρ V g

Fb = pfluid V g

Therefore:

ρ V g = Wa + pfluid V g

ρ = pfluid + Wa/Vg
