Equilibrium

For an object to remain in equilibrium, both the net force and the net torque must be equal to zero.

ΣF = 0     Στ = 0

Consider the hinged rod. It is held horizontally, with the torque due to gravity being balanced by the torque from a force with a vertical component applied at some point along the rod.

What happens when the upward force F is moved to the right? To maintain equilibrium:

  1. F must increase.
  2. F must decrease.

What happens to the hinge force when F is moved to the right? To maintain equilibrium:

  1. The downward hinge force increases.
  2. The downward hinge force decreases.
