Field-Line Patterns

The simulation shows the field line pattern near two charges. What can you conclude about these charges? Be as specific as possible. Charge 1 is on the left and charge 2 is on the right.

  1. Both charges are positive and they have the same magnitude
  2. Both charges are positive and charge 2 has a larger magnitude than charge 1
  3. Charge 1 is positive, charge 2 is negative, and they have the same magnitude
  4. Charge 1 is positive, charge 2 is negative, and charge 2 has a larger magnitude than charge 1
  5. They have opposite signs and charge 2 has a larger magnitude than charge 1

Charge 1 is positive because the field lines go away from the charge.
Charge 2 is negative because the field lines go toward the charge.
Charge 2 has a larger magnitude because it has more field lines.
