Kinetic energy is energy associated with motion. Rotational kinetic energy is given by:

K = ½ Iw²

Usually the only way to vary translational (straight-line) kinetic energy is to vary the speed, because mass is generally constant. For rotational motion both the angular speed and the rotational inertia can change.
