Why does an object fall over?

Generally an object is stable when its center of gravity is within the region defined by its base. For a table, for instance, the base is the area defined by the table legs.

If the center of gravity of an object falls outside this area it will tip over.

An object with a lower center of gravity is generally more stable because it is harder to shift the center of gravity outside the region defined by the base.
