Charging an Object

An object can acquire a net charge by touching another material. Bonds are formed when materials are brought into contact. These bonds break when the materials are separated, transferring electrons from one material to another.

Which material acquires electrons is determined by where the materials fit in the triboelectric series. When materials are rubbed together the one higher up the list gives electrons to the one further down the list.
