General course information

PY 105, Elementary Physics I, is an introduction to the principles of classical physics. The course will cover mechanics, conservation laws, heat and thermodynamics, and waves. It includes lecture, discussion, and laboratory components. The lecture schedule details the topics to be covered and the laboratory experiments.

A working knowledge of trigonometry and a familiarity with basic algebra is required. If you do not meet these requirements you must consult the lecturer.

Text and required materials

Text book: Physics, 3rd ed., by J. D. Cutnell & K. W. Johnson

Lab guide: Physics Intro I -- Laboratory Experiments

Lab notebooks: Two (2) bound 8-1/2 x 11 inch quadrille notebooks

These are available in the BU Bookstore. Note that the textbook comes in two versions, a hardcover that contains all material for PY105 and PY106, and a softcover in two volumes, volume I for PY105 and volume II for PY106.

A calculator with trig and exponential functions and their inverses will be useful.
