Course schedule:
- section A - TR 11 am in SCI 115 - Skocpol
- section B - TR 8 am in SCI 115 - Zimmerman
Day 1 - 1-13-98 - Spectra
Section A
Day 2 - 1-15-98 - Spectra, Absorption of photons
Section B
Day 3 - 1-20-98 - Photoelectric effect
Section A
- Two ballistics carts in an aquarium. One cart can shoot balls out of the aquarium; the other can not. This is a model of the photoelectric effect . The aquarium is a collection of atoms (the ballistics carts). Each cart can absorb a photon, possibly absorbing enough energy to eject an electron.
Section B
Day 4 - 1-22-98 - Rutherford scattering
Section A
- Another model, using the air track. One glider (of size 1) rebounds off a second stationary glider (size 1, 2, 3, or 4). The stationary glider is hidden behind a screen, but what the rebounding glider does tells you about the hidden glider.
