Field of Research: Theoretical Particle Physics

Research Statement: Prof. Schmaltz is investigating questions which are not explained by the standard model of particle physics. For example, what is the origin of the masses of the fundamental particles? Or what explains the different strengths of the four known forces (strong, weak, electromagnetism, gravity)? To answer these questions particle theorists are exploring new ideas such as supersymmetry, grand unification, extra dimensions, or the "little Higgs".
