Solution for problem in ROOT in Windows

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

For Windows users, if there are any problems dealing with ROOT, I recommand you to go back to root.cern.ch, and download it again. When you are done downloading, click “repair”. Then, it will fix the problem. (hopefully)

Hope that helps, =D

Luminosity

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Both Griffiths QM (P397) and our old classical mechanics bok (p365) describe luminosity (which I just knew as intensity or flux density). L=number of particles per unit area per unit time. We discussed it last semester when talking about scattering cross sections.

Cannot Copy/Paste anything into Root Terminal

Does anyone with Windows know how to fix this? It is making homework assignments incredibly difficult, having to type everything in.

Photo for UNIGE Journal

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This is not related to programming, but does anyone have a photo of the entire group we could give to Sylvie Fournier (the woman who is writing an article about this program in UNIGE’s newspaper)? She said she needs it within the next couple of days.
Thanks,

How to access, setup, etc. your new CERN mail account

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

As CERN user you have also an email address at CERN. You can access, setup, etc. your email account on the webpage: https://mmm.cern.ch/

You can login to this page with your nice account.

In case you want that all mail sent to your CERN mail address is sent to your e.g. BU account you can set up forwarding all emails to your other email account on this page as well.

PS: I have added the link to the MMM service to our link list as well.

What we need to do to access ‘cms-web-access’.

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Arno says that we need to register for TWiki. Here is the link.

It says Access Denied. So, link for ‘register’. And that is to register for an account in TWiki. Then, we need to wait for Prof. James Rohlf to let us join the egroup ‘cms-web-access’.

Hope that helps.

Root Browser

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

When I run “TBrowser b”, it opens up TRootBrowserLite and gives me this message:

“You are using the old ROOT browser! A new version is available. To use it:
Select the ‘New Browser’ entry from the ‘File’ menu in the browser, or change
‘Browser.Name:’ from ‘TRootBrowserLite’ to ‘TRootBrowser’ in system.rootrc”

However, I changed “TRootBrowserLite” to “TRootBrowser”, but I then had a Break-gdb not found type of error. Anybody know what’s up with this?

Thanks,

Michael

Logging into lxplus

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I was running the standard checks that Arno gave us to make sure everything is up and running on my computer. I discovered that I couldn’t run “xterm” while connected to lxplus.cern.ch I received the error “xterm Xt error: Can’t open display:”

Thanks to some help from Elim, I found out I was connected via “ssh user@lxplus.cern.ch” whereas I needed to be connected to “ssh -X user@lxplus.cern.ch”. Sure enough, I connected to ssh -X and was able to run “xterm” without a problem.

If you’re having problems with running “xterm”, try this out and see if it works.

Also Getting Access Denied

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I also get access denied when clicking on CMSSW Framework. If I reopen the browser I can get back into the CMS Twiki but that is all.

Problem accessing e-group “CMS web Access” in TWiki

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I tried to click on the “CMSSW” in the TWiki web, and I am denied to go to that page because I am not a member of the e-group “CMS-web-Access”. So, I emailed the TWiki person, Peter Jones, and this is the reply:

{You need to be in the egroup ‘cms-web-access’ in order to see CMS pages.

Check with your CMS coordinator

Peter Jones}

So, I am thinking if we need Arno’s permition to join the e-group…

Thanks, Elim =D
