We are planning a New England wide week-long retreat for new graduate students in experimental high energy particle physics. It will take place in New Hampshire's White Mountains at the Lexington Ski Club Lodge in North Woodstock NH. This retreat is intended for students who have completed their first year of graduate study, and are either committed to or are interested in pursuing a PhD in particle physics. There will be seminars on the hot topical items in the field as well as those topics that never seem to get covered in the usual graduate course curriculum (statistics and detectors!). Faculty from the participating schools will be attending the retreat and leading the seminars. A tentative schedule for the week is under preparation. The schedule and list of topics from our first workshop is available below.
The retreat is being held at the rustic Lodge of the Lexington Ski Club in North Woodstock NH. There will be a welcoming reception Sunday evening, August 16, and breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served at the lodge on Monday through Friday. There will be time off for outings at various times during the week: there are many beautiful hiking trails in the area or one can ride a gondola to the top of Canon Mountain and a steam train to the top of Mount Washington (NE's highest peak). Other nearby attractions are a water slide and a microbrewery.
Accommodations at the lodge range from private rooms to shared rooms with several bunks. Although linens and towels will be provided we'll be expected to make our own beds and do our own meeting space setup. As a result we will be able to keep the cost of the week low. Currently we are estimating that the retreat will cost approximately $250 per student for the entire week.
Whether you are a student or a faculty member we hope you will plan to attend the retreat. Although it is targeted towards graduate students between their first and second years, it may also be appropriate to invite incoming students. At this point we are looking for solid expressions of interest so that we can better estimate numbers and fill out our list of seminar leaders. The capacity of the lodge is about 75 people, and we think somewhere around 25 students and 10 faculty will be a critical mass. Actual signups for the retreat together with a deposit will be requested early next year. If you are interested please contact your local member of the organizing committee.
