SUMMARY:Search for Neutron Oscillation at Super-Kamiokande
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Jeffrey Gustafson\n\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exa
m.\n\nExamining Committee: Ed Kearns\, Robert Carey\, Shyamsunder Erramilli
\, Martin Schmaltz\n\n\nObservable neutron oscillations provide an interest
ing and well-motivated\nwindow into physics beyond the Standard Model. They
violate baryon number\,\nthus making them a good candidate process for bar
yogenesis. They are also \nsensitive to a potentially wide range of energy
scales\, the lower limit of which are\nbeyond those achievable at particle
accelerators. I will discuss various physics\naspects of this process\, as
well as its dominant background in the context of\na water cherenkov detect
or\, atmospheric neutrino interactions. I will discuss\nefforts to improve
the analysis done by the Super-Kamiokande collaboration for\nits first data
-taking period (April 1996 - July 2001) and show that significant\nimprovem
ents can be made in the signal-to-background ratio\, and thereby the\noscil
lation time lower limit\, by considering new variables and applying\nmulti-
variate techniques. Future analysis prospects are also discussed.
