SUMMARY:Songbo Jin - Preliminary Oral exam
DESCRIPTION:\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exam.\n\nTitle:\n Phase Transiti
ons in the J1−J2 Ising Model on the Square Lattice\n Abstract:\n The
J1-J2 Ising model on the square lattice is one of the simplest classical mo
dels to study the effects of competing inter-actions and the resulting phas
e transitions. In spite of previous studies\, there remains a controversy r
egarding the nature of the transition into the “stripe“ phase i
n this model for J2/J1 > 0.5. We analyzed quantities such as Binder cumulan
t\, specific heat and susceptibility. The finite size scalings of these qua
ntities indicate the phase transition for J2/J1>0.5 is continuous despite t
here are partial first order phase transition signatures shown by the negat
ive and divergent Binder cumulant and bimodal distribution of order paramet
er and energy.\n\n Examining Committee: Anders Sandvik\, William Klei
n\, Anatoli Polkovnikov\, James Rohlf\n\n Best wishes to Songbo!!
