SUMMARY:A Veto for the ZEPLIN-III Dark Matter Detector
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Emma Barnes\, U. Edinburgh\nHosted by: Lee Roberts\n\
nPart of the HEE Seminar Series.\n\nCold dark matter in the form of weakly
interacting massive particles (WIMPs) is a favoured explanation to the gala
ctic dark matter puzzle and could account for a large proportion of the mis
sing mass of the Universe. The ZEPLIN-III detector aims to detect dark mat
ter by utilizing liquid xenon as a target medium. A successful first scien
ce run has demonstrated the benefits of ZEPLIN-III's unique high-field oper
ation\, open-plan geometry and use of radiologically clean materials. Furth
er sensitivity reach is to be achieved by retro-fitting a high efficiency v
eto detector. This talk will present the requirements\, design and simulati
on of the veto as well as presenting results from the first science run and
also the potential of ZEPLIN-III in its upgraded state.
