SUMMARY:Dielectric effects in self-assembly of binary colloid mixtures
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Kipton Barros\, Los Alamos National Lab\nHosted by: W
illiam Klein\n\nPart of the Biophysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\n
Abstract:\nElectrostatic interactions are often relevant to the self-assemb
ly of colloids. In such systems\, dielectric effects yield complicated mult
i-body interactions via polarization charge induced at the colloid surfaces
. These interactions are difficult to quantify and have been ignored in pre
vious simulations of colloids with implicit solvent. I will review the phys
ics of dielectrics and present an efficient numerical method to calculate e
lectrostatic interactions in arbitrary dielectric geometry. Surprising coll
ective behavior is observed in molecular dynamics simulations of weakly cha
rged\, size asymmetric colloid mixtures: dielectric effects are found to in
	fluence crystallization and symmetry.
