SUMMARY:Flavor-Hall effect and nonlocal charge transport in graphene
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Dima Abanin\, Princeton University\n\nPart of the Con
densed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract:The properties of charge c
arriers in ideal graphene system are governed by a number of\nsymmetries\,
	including time-reversal symmetry\, inversion symmetry\, and particle-hole s
ymmetry.\nIn a realistic setting\, some or all of these symmetries can be n
aturally broken: magnetic\nfield breaks time-reversal symmetry\, strain of
the graphene sheet breaks the inversion\nsymmetry\, while the particle-hole
symmetry is broken by Coulomb interactions and free-particle\neffects such
as the next-nearest-neighbor hopping. Such symmetry breaking can\nlead to
energy splitting of the two valleys. We show that the resulting imbalance o
f the Hall\nconductivities leads to valley-Hall effect\, similar to the spi
n-Hall effect\, but with the valley\nplaying the role of spin. In the regim
	e of slow inter-valley relaxation\, the valley-Hall effect\nmanifests itsel
f in non-local charge transport. Remarkably\, the non-local response can oc
cur\nin both classical and quantized Hall transport regimes. We show that t
he nonlocal response\ncan be used as a diagnostic for different types of sy
mmetry breaking at the Dirac point.\nIn addition\, our study provides an ex
planation of recent experiments of Manchester group\,\nin which pronounced
non-locality of transport in macroscopic graphene samples subject to\nmagne
	tic field has been observed.
