SUMMARY:A quantum liquid with deconfined fractional excitations in three di
	mensions
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Nic Shannon\, University of Bristol\n\nPart of the Co
	ndensed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract:\nExcitations which carry
	 ``fractional'' quantum numbers are known to exist in one dimension\nin pol
	yacetylene\, and in two dimensions\, in the fractional quantum Hall effect.
	   Fractional\nexcitations have also been invoked to explain the breakdown 
	of the conventional theory of\nmetals in a wide range of three-dimensional 
	materials.   However the existence of fractional\nexcitations in three dime
	nsions remains highly controversial.\n\nHere we report direct numerical evi
	dence for the existence of an extended quantum liquid phase supporting frac
	tional excitations in a concrete\, three-dimensional microscopic\nmodel --;
	- the quantum dimer model on a diamond lattice [1].\n\nWe demonstrate expli
	citly that the energy cost of separating fractional monomer\nexcitations va
	nishes in this liquid phase\, and that its energy spectrum matches\nthat of
	 the Coulomb phase in (3+1) dimensional quantum electrodynamics [2\,3].\n\n
