SUMMARY:Exploring LHC data in the di-lepton final state
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Dmytro Kovalskyi\, University of California at Santa
Barbara\n\nPart of the HEE Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: The Large Hadron Co
llider (LHC) has received a lot of press over the last few years. We succes
sfully recovered from the accident that occurred in 2008\, recording our fi
rst collisions at the end of 2009\, with the first papers on 900 GeV and 2.
4 TeV data now published. We currently expect to collect up to 1/fb of data
at 7 TeV during 2010-2011. By now we know the physics at the energies acce
ssible to the current generation of colliders very well. To complete the pi
cture we are missing just one piece\, the Higgs boson. It may well be the e
nd of the story\, but there is a strong indication that we are at a turning
point of high-energy physics. The energies accessible to the new collider
enter the territory where our models become contradictory and self-inconsis
tent. In my talk I will show you discovery prospects with the CMS detector
at the LHC using the di-lepton final state.
