SUMMARY:Preparations for First Physics with ATLAS
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Adam Gibson\, University of Toronto\n\nPart of the H
EE Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: With much anticipation\, CERN's Large Hadro
n Collider (LHC) is about to enter fully into its role as the world's highe
st energy particle collider. This will enable us to directly address many
of the biggest questions in particle physics. Hopefully some surprises are
waiting on the high-energy frontier. The ATLAS detector has gone through
an extensive commissioning phase with studies of calibration\, cosmic ray\,
single beam\, and low energy collision data. The ATLAS detector and colla
boration are well prepared for the start of high energy LHC operations. I
will discuss the commissioning process with particular attention to calorim
etry and jets. I will present our plans for handling the billion events th
at we will record each year and how we will prepare them for physics analys
is. I will discuss early measurements in the context of the Standard Model
\, ATLAS' first physics publication\, and early searches for new physics wi
th jets. We expect the first high energy collisions on March 30\, so hopef
ully we can also look together at some of the world's first 7 TeV collision
	s.
