SUMMARY:On the Hunt for New Physics at the LHC
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Kevin Black\, Harvard University\n\nPart of the HEE S
eminar Series.\n\nAbstract:\nThe long awaited Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
has begun operation. Its first sustained run of proton-proton collisions wi
ll begin in just a few weeks. This will enable us to start exploring the mu
lti TeV scale directly for the first time. The first data taking period wil
l allow us not only to re-establish the Standard Model but also begin the p
rocess of searching for direct evidence of new particles beyond it. Among t
he first processes to be observed and understood with the LHC detectors wil
l be those with final states involving high momentum leptons. I will review
the status and commissioning of the ATLAS detector with cosmic rays and fi
rst collision events\, the prospects for first physics measurements\, and p
reparations for searches beyond the Standard Model.
