SUMMARY:WATER AND LIFE:  The Role of Energy

	ries.\n\nAbstract:\nSchool children learn that water has three phases: soli
	d\, liquid and\nvapor. But we have recently uncovered what appears to be a 
	fourth\nphase. This phase occurs next to water-loving (hydrophilic) surface
	s. It\nis surprisingly extensive\, projecting out from the surface sometime
	s by\nup to millions of molecular layers.\n\nOf particular significance is 
	the observation that this fourth phase is\ncharged. And\, the water just be
	yond is oppositely charged\, creating a\nbattery that can produce current. 
	We found that this battery is\nrecharged by light. Thus\, water can receive
	 and process electromagnetic\nenergy drawn from the environment\, much like
	 plants. The absorbed light\nenergy can then be exploited for performing wo
	rk\, including electrical\nand mechanical work. Recent experiments confirm 
	this.\n\nThe energy-conversion framework implied above seems rich with\nimp
	lication. Not only does it provide an understanding of how water\nprocesses
	 solar energy\, but also it may provide a foundation for simpler\nunderstan
	ding natural phenomena ranging from weather and green energy\nall the way t
	o the origin of life.\n\nThe lecture will present evidence for the presence
	 of this fourth phase\nof water\, and will consider its potentially broad i
	mplications for\nphysics\, chemistry and biology.
