SUMMARY:Observing the Dimensionality of our Parent Vacuum
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Surjeet Rajendran\, MIT\n\nPart of the HET Seminar Se
ries.\n\nAbstract:\nIt seems generic to have vacua with lower dimensionalit
y than ours. We consider\nthe possibility that the observable universe orig
inated in a transition from\none of these vacua. Such a universe has anisot
ropic spatial curvature. This may\nbe directly observable through its late-
time effects on the CMB if the last\nperiod of slow-roll inflation was not
too long. These affect the entire sky\,\nleading to correlations which pers
ist up to the highest CMB multipoles\, thus\nallowing a conclusive detectio
n above cosmic variance. Further\, this\nanisotropic curvature causes diffe
rent dimensions to expand at different rates.\nThis leads to other potentia
lly observable signals including a quadrupolar\nanisotropy in the CMB which
limits the size of the curvature. Conversely\, if\nisotropic curvature is
observed it may be evidence that our parent vacuum was\nat least 3+1 dimens
ional. Such signals could reveal our history of\ndecompactification\, provi
ding evidence for the existence of vastly different\nvacua.
