SUMMARY:Strange metal from holography
DESCRIPTION:Featuring John McGreevy\, MIT\n\nPart of the HET Seminar Series
.\n\nABSTRACT:\n This talk is about a class of non-Fermi liquids\, identif
ied using the AdS/CFT correspondence.\nAfter motivating the study of non-Fe
rmi liquids\, I will describe the calculation of response functions of com
posite fermionic operators in certain strongly-interacting quantum field t
heories at finite density\,\nusing a classical gravity theory. They exhib
it Fermi surfaces: gapless fermionic excitations at discrete shells in mom
entum space. The low-energy excitations near such a Fermi suface are not
Landau quasiparticles. For some values of the parameters of the gravity t
	heory\, the system is a `marginal Fermi liquid\,' a phenomenological model
of the `strange metal' phase of high temperature superconductors.\nThe con
tribution to the conductivity from these holographic Fermi surfaces has a t
emperature dependence consistent with the application to strange metal.
