SUMMARY:Supersolidity in a quantum degenerate dipolar spinor gas
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Mukund Vengalattore\, Cornell University\n\nPart of t
he Condensed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract:\nI will describe st
udies on the magnetic and superfluid order of quantum\ndegenerate F=1 {87}R
b spinor gases. In these magnetic quantum fluids\, we\nobserve the spontane
ous emergence of a self-organized phase exhibiting a\ncrystalline ordering
of magnetic domains. We ascribe this spatial\norganization to the competiti
on between the short-range ferromagnetic\ninteraction and the long-range ma
gnetic dipolar interaction. Further\,\nvia Bragg spectroscopy of this dipol
ar quantum fluid\, we confirm the\npresence of long-range phase coherence (
characteristic of a superfluid)\nco-existing with the crystalline magnetic
order. Together\, these results\nprovide strong experimental evidence for t
he realization of the\nsupersolid phase of matter.
