SUMMARY:The statistics of the work done in quantum quenches
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Alessandro Silva\, ICTP\, Triste\, Italy\n\nPart of t
	he Condensed Matter Theory Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: A quantum quench is
	 a rapid change in time of a control\n parameter in the hamiltonian describ
	ing a quantum\, correlated many body\n system.  In this talk I will discuss
	 a fundamental way to characterize\n these processes using basic thermodyna
	mic variables and looking at their\n statistics. I will first elucidate the
	 connection between a classic\n problem of condensed matter physics\, the F
	ermi edge singularity\, a\n quantity emerging in the context of dephasing\,
	 the Loschmidt echo\, and the\n statistics of the work done in a quantum qu
	ench.\n Using this connection\, I will then characterize the statistics of 
	the work\n done on a quantum Ising chain by quenching locally or globally t
	he\n transverse field\, showing that for local quenches starting at critica
	lity\,\n the probability distribution of the work displays an interesting e
	dge\n singularity. Similar singularities emerge in other quantum critical\n
	 systems\, such as the Dicke model.
