SUMMARY:Experiments with gases in 0D\, 1D and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Featuring David Weiss\, Pennsylvania State University\nHosted b
	y: Anatoli Polkovnikov\nPoster: http://physics.bu.edu/internal//posters/200
8_Fall/07_Weiss.pdf\n\nPart of the Physics Department Colloquia Series.\n\n
Abstract: I will review the physics of 1D Bose gases\, show how we experime
ntally implement them\, and describe experiments that confirm the longstand
ing exact theory across all coupling regimes. I will also describe quantum
Newton's cradles\, which are out-of-equilibrium 1D gases that act unlike an
y other many-body system\, and explain what they might teach us about the n
ature of irreversibility in quantum systems. I will also describe a separa
te experiment in which we image hundreds of single atoms in a 3D array\, an
d show how we plan to use them as qubits in a quantum computer.
