SUMMARY:On the estimation of damages due to coastal floods
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Diego Rybski\, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact R
esearch (PIK)\, Germany\nHosted by: Ronny Bartsch\n\nAbstract:Sea level ris
e is going to affect the statistics of extreme sealevels. If one wants to c
alculate damages due to upcoming stormsurges\, it is necessary to estimate
the damage due toindividual flood events. In the case of (coastal) floods\,
so called stage damage functions are employed\, which provide for aflood o
f certain maximum level a typical damage that occurs ata considered locatio
	n. We investigate how changes in theextreme value statistics affect the exp
ected damages and find surprisingly simple relations. Our results show that
inaddition to the knowledge about local sea level rise\, it isessential to
know the actual form of damage functions whichusually follow power-laws. T
hus\, we estimate damage functions (i) from historical flood damages and (i
	i) from a limited case study.
