SUMMARY:Starting from the top: plans & prospects for early ATLAS results
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Ayana Holloway Arce\, Lawrence Berkeley National Labo
ratory\n\nPart of the HEE Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: The Large Hadron Col
lider (LHC) will soon enable the first precise measurements of particle int
eractions in an energy regime where the validity of the Standard Model is a
lready challenged\, so we are optimistic about finding compelling evidence
for a new theory with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. This optimism is te
mpered by trepidation at the challenges of commissioning ATLAS and determin
ing physical constants in a new collider environment. I will discuss some
measurement strategies involving top quarks that may help us cope.
