SUMMARY:Controlling collective activity in a population of neurons

	 the Biophysics/Condensed Matter Seminar Series.\n\nAbstract: We suggest a 
	method for suppression of  synchrony in a globally or randomly coupled osci
	llator network. The method is based on the time-delayed feedback via the me
	an field. Having in mind possible applications for suppression of pathologi
	cal rhythms in neural ensembles\, we present numerical results for differen
	t models of coupled spiking and bursting neurons. We present a theory\, bas
	ed on the consideration of the synchronization transition as a Hopf bifurca
	tion.\n\nNext\, we consider the main factors of imperfection of the control
	 scheme and their influence on the suppression efficiency. Further\, with t
	he help of a realistic model of synaptically coupled population of inhibito
	ry and excitatory neurons\, we demonstrate the potential of the suppression
	 scheme for neurophysiological applications.
