SUMMARY:Aspects of spontaneous symmetry breaking in LCT
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Kyriakos Grammatikos\, Boston University\nHosted by:
Eric Boyers\n\nPart of the Graduate Student Council Events.\n\nPart of the
student seminar series. A recording will be posted on the event page.\n\nAb
stract: QFT still remains an elusive subject about 80 years after its conce
ption. While remaining the only consistent framework for the relativistic t
reatment of quantum particles\, it boasts a vast phenomenological variety a
nd it still poses conceptual and computational challenges\, one being the d
etection of phase transitions in strongly interacting QFTs. The majority of
existing tools rely on putting QFTs on a lattice\, a powerful approach tha
t requires however treating the theory in finite volume and extrapolating t
o obtain dynamical quantities. In this talk\, I present a tool that aims to
fill this gap. Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) is a computational sch
eme that marries together the power of conformal field theories and lightco
ne quantization in a framework capable of extracting variational approximat
ions to infinite volume correlation functions and more importantly\, an app
roximation to the spectrum of a field theory\, which may reveal important i
nformation about the low-lying bound states of the theory. We use our tool
to investigate a boson in a quartic potential with a cubic deformation\, a
model known to exhibit a transition\, which at weak coupling is a product
of spontaneous symmetry breaking. We present results on the spectrum\, corr
elation functions and the map of the phase transition and discuss possible
emergent descriptions for the line of criticality.
