SUMMARY:Realizing a synthetic topological insulator with a quasi-periodical
	ly driven qubit
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Eric Boyers\, Boston University\, Physics Department\
n\nPart of the Preliminary Oral Exam.\n\nSynthetic dimensions are a class o
f techniques which extend the effective\ndimensionality of a system by intr
oducing additional degrees of freedom that\nmimic spatial dimensions. These
techniques have emerged as a major area\nof research in recent years as a
means to enrich the physics accessible by experiments and study phenomena t
hat cannot be easily realized in real space.\nSynthetic topological systems
in particular have received much attention due\nto their close connection
with topological pump systems and their potential\napplications in quantum
simulation and devices.\nWhile synthetic topological systems have been demo
nstrated in a number of platforms\, few attempts have been made to realize
them in few-level\nsystems. The long coherence times\, robust read-out tech
niques\, and precise controls of the Hamiltonians of solid state qubits mak
e them promising\ncandidates for creating synthetic topological systems.\nI
	n this talk\, I present an experimental demonstration of a model that\nreal
izes a synthetic topological insulator in a qubit using a quasi-periodicall
y\ndriven Nitrogen-vacancy center. By measuring the evolution of the overla
p of\nstates prepared at nearby points in the synthetic Brillioun zone\, we
perform\na Loschmidt echo-like experiment that directly probes the Berry c
urvature\nand allows for the measurement of the Chern number. We find that
the\nChern number is integer quantized as expected and we use it to map out
\nthe phase diagram of the model. Our results show close agreement with\nth
eory\, including an effective half-integer Chern number at a critical point
in\nthe model. This work establishes the feasibility of quasi-periodically
driven\nqubits as a platform for synthetic dimensions and lays the groundw
ork for\npossible device applications such as frequency converters.\n\n----
