	r Series.\n\nAbstract: Cognitive states appear to be in one-to-one correspo
	ndencewith states of the brain. &nbsp;In principle it should be possible to
	develop satisfactory physical models of our internal experience. &nbsp;Thea
	pproach we take is to first develop concise mathematical descriptionsthat a
	ccount for a broad variety of observable behavioral phenomena.If these desc
	riptions are correct\, then they ought to be constrainedby neural observati
	ons as well as behavioral ones.Much of memory research hinges on how people
	 remember recent events.I describe how the real-time stimulus function lead
	ing up to thepresent moment can be encoded via the Laplace transform. &nbsp
	;Areal-domain method for approximating the inversion of the Laplacetransfor
	m results in a scale-invariant representation of recenthistory as a functio
	n of internal past time. &nbsp;&nbsp;A translation operatorcan be specified
	 that enables the prediction of trajectories of futurestates forward in int
	ernal future time. &nbsp;&nbsp;The model provides a concisedescription of a
	 variety of behavioral results in episodic memory\,interval timing\, and co
	nditioning. &nbsp;At the neural level\, developmentof the model paralleled 
	the observation of ``time cells'' in therodent hippocampus\, a brain struct
	ure that is essential for episodicmemory. &nbsp;The hippocampus is also bel
	ieved to be important for oursense of allocentric space: hippocampal ``plac
	e cells'' showsensitivity to a variety of spatial correlates as the animal 
	movesaround its environment. &nbsp;&nbsp;I show that the equations of the m
	odel ofinternal time can be seen as a special case of a more generalframewo
	rk that describes not only time cells but also a wide varietyof place cell 
	phenomena as well.
