SUMMARY:Dan Arcaro - Measurement of the Total and Differential Cross Sectio
n of Z Boson Production in Association with Jets in Proton-proton Collision
	s at Sqrt(s)= 13 TeV
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Daniel Arcaro\n\nPart of the PhD Final Oral Exams.\n\
	nExamining Committee: L. R. Sulak\, John Butler\, Robert Carey\, Sheldon G
lashow\, Karl Ludwig\, Indara Suarez\n\nAbstract\nZ boson production in ass
ociation with jets at the LHC is a major source of background to standard m
odel searches and it provides a sensitive evaluation of the accuracy of per
turbative QCD predictions. The production of a Z boson\, decaying to two ch
arged muons\, in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a cen
tre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV is presented. The cross sections and their rat
ios are measured with data recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 201
6\, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9/fb. The cross section
s are measured as a function of observables including the transverse moment
um and rapidity of the Z boson\, the jet transverse momentum and rapidity f
or the five highest momentum jets\, and jet multiplicity. The measurements
are compared with predictions from a multileg next-to-leading-order Monte C
arlo generator and a next-to-next-to-leading order calculation with next-to
-next-to-leading logarithm resummation and parton showering.
